The Chequerboard House – EB 1860 Reproduction Sampler Pattern by Hands Across the Sea Samplers (PDF)

The sampler features a house with a lawn stitched in Turkey work / Ghiordes knot that can be found in many Scottish samplers. The patchwork effect of the stone blocks the young girl used to “build” her house gives the sampler a distinctive look of its own.

With the exception of the two tiny birds, that are stitched in cross stitch over one, the sampler is suitable for stitching on linen or Aida. We have included two birds cross stitched over 2 threads of linen for you, if preferred,  to replace the ones stitched over one thread of linen.

The stitches used are mainly cross stitch over two threads of linen and double running stitch. The three lawns below the house are stitched with Turkey work but this could be replaced with cross stitches and the graph accounts for this.

The design area is 156 stitches (w) x 169 stitches (h). Our calculations have included a 3″ margin for finishing and framing.

28ct: Design: 11.14″ x 12.07″ Fabric: 17.14″ x 18.07″

30ct: Design: 10.40″ x 11.27″ Fabric: 16.40″ x 17.27″

32ct: Design: 9.75″ x 10.56″ Fabric: 15.75″ x 16.56″

36ct: Design: 8.67″ x 9.39″ Fabric: 14.67″ x 15.39″

40ct: Design: 7.80″ x 8.45″ Fabric: 13.80″ x 14.45″

46ct: Design: 6.78″ x 7.35″ Fabric: 12.78″ x 13.35″

This distinctive sampler has been reproduced with a palette of 14 colours from Au Ver à Soie’s range of Soie 100.3. We have provided conversions for Soie d’Alger and DMC. Only one spool or skein of each colour is required. However,  if you are filling the lawns with Turkey work you may need an extra skein of 3424/502. If you replace this stitch with cross stitch a second skein is not required.
