Gloria ~ A Christmas Star - Cross Stitch Pattern by Modern Folk Embroidery
Whilst doing research for a previous pattern, I came across a beautiful coach cushion* from the South-West of Sweden. This flat-weave cushion was made in 1801, and is currently a part of Hemslöjdens Samlingar (the collection of The National Association of Swedish Handicraft Societies). It depicts two large stars (or 8-leave roses, as they are also known), each containing smaller stars in its corner.
This concept became the springboard for this Christmas star pattern. It features the latin text Gloria in excelsis deo et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis, which translates as Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
It’s a perfect Christmas project to work on, and could be used as a cushion cover, but would look great in a frame also!
This pattern measures 153 by 153 stitches – embroidered on 32-count linen it would measure approximately 9 ½” by 9 ½” (24.5 by 24.5 cm).
