We were so pleased to find a pair of samplers stitched by a brother and sister. The icing on the cake was the additional discovery of the Hubbards’ family history and that the samplers came from Norfolk.
The dates on the two samplers are the date of birth for Emma and Martin; Emma having been born on July 26, 1869 and Martin on October 16, 1870. The samplers were stitched in the year 1880 when Emma was 11 years and Martin 10 years old.
Thread Legend
Emma and Martin’s samplers have been reproduced using a palette of 2 colours with Soie 100.3 from Au Ver à Soie. We have provided conversions for Soie d’Alger and DMC.
You will only require one spool or skein of each colour for stitching either or both samplers on 36 to 56ct. When working with two strands on 28ct you will require two skeins of each colour when working both samplers.

Linen Sizes
The original sampler was stitched on paper with silk thread. The model was stitched using Zweigart-based linen that was overdyed to the shade Marbled Pointer by xJuDesigns. The sampler is suitable for stitching on Aida, Linaida, and linen. We recommend that you use a thread, fabric, and count that you enjoy working with.
The design area of each sampler is 87 stitches (w) x 109 stitches (h). Our calculations include a 3″ margin for finishing and framing. If stitching both samplers you will need double these amounts.
