Stitches used: The entire exterior border is done over one thread. The interior cartouche is over two threads with some flowers over one thread and some over two threads. The verse, name and year is over one thread. Satin stitch and cross stitch are used for the flower to the left of the word Extract. A mirroring flower to the right was never stitched and so a blank space remains. One can choose to not stitch the large flower to keep it balanced.The yellow bow and ribbon at the top is done in satin stitch and outlined in straight stitch.

Provenance: This sampler was obtained from the Steven and Carol Huber Collection who provided this accompanying information: Jane was the middle child of eleven born in 1813 to Cyrus Milner and Sarah Carter whose initials Jane stitched in the bottom cartouche (CM SM). She stitched this intricate and colorful sampler at the age of seventeen. At age 22, on New Year’s Eve day, she married Jacob Levi Kerk and they became parents to seven children. Jane died at age 59 and was buried in Eastlands Friends Burial Ground, Little Britain, Lancaster
